Officials: Escaped pet python strangled Fla. child
OXFORD, Fla. – A pet Burmese python measuring more than 8 feet long broke out of a terrarium and strangled a 2-year-old girl in her bedroom Wednesday at a central Florida home, authorities said. Shaiunna Hare was already dead when paramedics arrived at about 10 a.m., Lt. Bobby Caruthers of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said.
Charles Jason Darnell, the snake’s owner and the boyfriend of Shaiunna’s mother, discovered the snake missing from its terrarium and went to the girl’s room, where he found it on the girl and bite marks on her head, Caruthers said. Darnell, 32, stabbed the snake until he was able to pry the child away.
“The baby’s dead!” a sobbing caller from the house screamed to a 911 dispatcher in a recording. “Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the...

Stephen Colbert takes on lawsuit against Seattle fireworks show
You know you’ve struck a nerve when Stephen Colbert weighs in.
In blistering faux outrage, the Comedy Central “news commentator” took a Lake City man to task for filing a lawsuit that says the city must conduct an environmental review before lighting the fuse on the July 4th fireworks show at Gas Works Park, a partially remediated toxic-waste site.
Environmental activist Benjamin Schroeter says, among other things, that those thousands upon thousands of people at the show could kick loose protective soil that caps the contaminated dirt below.
Colbert was having none of it.
“Well, now another holiday is getting kicked right in the cherry bombs, folks,” he said on his Tuesday program.
He continued: “I say an abandoned gas plant is the perfect place to shoot off fireworks. The pyrotechnics could last for weeks....

TWO SCHOOL OFFICIALS GOT PUNISHED FOR LETTING “BRUNO” TAKE PICTURES WITH THEIR FOOTBALL TEAM
The current issue of “GQ” magazine includes a photo spread of SACHA BARON COHEN posing as his latest character, Bruno.
Most of the pictures are inappropriate in one way or another . . . but a few of them actually got two people punished.
The pictures in question are of Bruno posing with the Birmingham High School football team in Van Nuys, California. Bruno is wearing almost nothing but pads . . . and some of the poses are somewhat suggestive.
And now, two people who apparently let this happen have received some sort of punishment from the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Those two are Birmingham principal Marsha Coates and athletic director Rick Prizant.
Superintendent Ramon Cortines says, quote, “I don’t believe there is a place on any high school campus in America, including Los Angeles, for photos such...

Suspected bank robber rams cop car, gets shot
SEATTLE — A suspected bank robber was shot after crashing into a patrol car just hours after a bank was robbed a few miles down the road.
Seattle police said they came upon a silver truck with a license plate linked to a bank robbery in Shoreline. Officers also learned the truck was stolen, and called for backup around 5:30 p.m.
“He called for back-up units. Back-up units arrived and they tried to basically box the vehicle in in attempt to take the suspect into custody,” said Asst. Chief Nick Metz.
But the driver refused to cooperate and instead rammed into a patrol car at Greenwood Avenue North and Holman Road North, police said. A detective fired four shots, hitting the man in the arm.
Once hit, officers said the man accelerated again, smashing into a nearby SUV, which was carrying a man and his two small children. The...

Airline safety video gives truly bare essentials
Air New Zealand is getting down to the bare essentials with a new in-flight safety video that features flight attendants wearing just body paint.
It’s aimed at making passengers pay attention to the often-overlooked airline safety videos shown at the start of each flight.
“We wanted to find a way to deliver these important pre-flight messages to our domestic travelers in a way that was genuine, engaging and fun,” said Air New Zealand marketing manager Steve Bayliss.
The safety video was launched Monday on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 737 domestic flights (and could expand to other routes). It follows the airline’s “Nothing to Hide” ad campaign, which featured pilots, cabin crew and even airline CEO Roy Fyfe wearing just body paint in TV ads this spring to promote the airline’s no-hidden-fees domestic...
